Why do you need Localization?

The globalization of markets has made it necessary for companies to distribute their products beyond the borders of their home countries. This requires the translation and adaptation of all product components, such as software and documentation. The adaptation to the country-specific characteristics (i.e. time and date formats, measurements, distances, currencies) and the translation into the target language is known as localization.

Localization allows companies to multiply their total turnover. In contrast to classical products, the production costs of software do not increase proportionally. Localization costs are minimal in comparison to the development costs of software products. However, localization can increase the number of licenses sold many times over.

Microsoft, for example, was one of the first companies to recognize the strategic significance of localization and today it is one of the pioneers in this area: in addition to localized operating systems, applications such as Microsoft Office are available in numerous languages.

Complexity of Localization

Software which has inconsistent user interfaces or even contains incorrect terminology, which has an online help or manuals, the technical documentation, that contains both linguistic shortcomings and has not been correctly "translated" to the software, will diminish the users' acceptance of the software, will make operation more difficult. In the best case scenario, this will lead to an increase in support queries and in the worst case scenario such problems could lead to the failure of this product in a new market.

Localization specialists with the necessary skills are invaluable. However, it is often not possible for small and medium-sized companies to hire such specialists, especially in light of turnover and cost pressures. In such situations, temporary external support is the solution that is necessary in order to serve international markets and, with the help of localized software and documentation, to increase license sales significantly.
